HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/15/06) – Colgate University women's hockey player Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) was named the USCHO.com National Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending November 12.
This is the second time this season Colgate has garnered a national player of the week honor. Carly McNaughton earned the award on Nov. 1, and Brook Wheeler was named the defensive player of the week last season on Jan. 25, 2006.
Sophomore netminder Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) was this week's USCHO.com National Defensive Player of the Week Runner-Up, as the top honor went to New Hampshire's Melissa Bourdon.
Hunt played outstanding this past weekend against two of the league's toughest opponents, nationally-ranked Harvard and Dartmouth. She led the Raiders in scoring with three points, tallying three goals over the weekend, as Colgate took No. 8 Harvard to overtime and defeated No. 4/5 Dartmouth for the first time.
Hunt scored Colgate's first goal against Harvard, seconds after killing off a five-minute major when she went end-to-end and displayed great stick skills, slipping the puck through a defender's legs and beating netminder Brittany Martin one-on-one. She put the Raiders up 3-2 at 15:18 of the third, tucking in a rebound. On Saturday, Hunt lit the lamp with a power-play goal at 8:22 of the first frame, ripping a shot from the right face-off circle to put Colgate up 1-0.
The sophomore center leads the team in scoring with 12 points off of a team-high seven goals and five helpers. She is on an eight-game scoring streak, collecting 10 points in the last eight contests. Hunt has scored in all but one game this season.
Hamashuk stopped 60 of 65 shots against Harvard and Dartmouth en route to being named the ECACHL Goaltender of the Week. She made six saves in the final 2:37 to preserve the win against the Big Green.
Colgate begins a four-game homestand on Friday, Nov. 17 when it hosts Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. Princeton will visit Starr Rink on Saturday, Nov. 18 for a 4 p.m., contest.
