HAMILTON, N.Y. (8/26/2006)—The Colgate University volleyball team featured three players with double-digit kills as it earned a 3-1 victory over La Salle University in the final match of the Colgate Classic. Junior Erin Kanetzke (Cincinnati, Ohio) led all players with a career-high 20 kills and an impressive .452 hitting percentage.

Colgate downed the Explorers 30-27, 29-31, 31-29, 30-20 to improve to 2-1 on the season.  The loss puts La Salle at 1-2 on the season after the Explorers dropped Rider 3-1 earlier in the day.

Sophomore Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif.) posted her second double-double in three games with 18 kills and 18 digs, while freshman Kelsea Loveless (Lubbock, Texas) did the same with 15 kills and 13 digs. Freshman setter Meghan Fanta (Hillsboro, Wis.) also registered her first career double-double with a match-high 55 assists and 17 digs. Sophomore libero Jackie Adlam (Mill Valley, Calif.) anchored the back row defense with 31 digs.

The Raiders opened the match in exciting fashion, mounting a come-from-behind 30-27 victory. Colgate trailed by as many as seven, 17-10, before putting together a 14-7 run to tie the game at 24. La Salle took the lead again 27-26 off a kill from Christa Dominick, but it was Zawojski putting the Raiders ahead for good at 28-27.

Senior captain Marybeth Maziarz (Wilbraham, Mass.) knocked down a kill to set up the game point, while Loveless served out the final point and the victory.

The second game was a lot of back and forth action, featuring 10 ties and five lead changes. The Raiders went ahead 29-28 on a block from Loveless and Maziarz, but the Explorers capitalized on a few attack errors in the final few points to tie the match at one game apiece.

The third game was nearly a mirror image of the second as Colgate and La Salle traded the lead five times and were tied 11 times during the game. The Raiders took an 18-14 lead, but the Explorers chipped away and regained a 28-25 advantage. Colgate earned a side out off a Loveless kill to make it 28-26 and Maziarz added another kill to make it a one-point contest. The Explorers had game point at 29-27, but a kills by freshman Ilona Matulaitis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and two straight service aces from Loveless gave the Raiders the 31-29 victory.

Leading 2-1 in the match, Colgate jumped all over La Salle in the fourth game, going ahead 20-9 and cruising to the 30-20 victory for the match.

Dominick led all La Salle players with 13 kills, while Amy McKeon had 11. Caitlin Conner provided 38 assists and 13 digs. Carolyn Judge registered a match-high 36 digs and Erin Sullivan had a solid outing with eight kills and 12 digs.

The Raiders return to action on Sept. 1, against Marist in the Marist Tournament. That game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
