French Named Student-Athlete of the Year
HANOVER, N.H. (3/2/06) – Colgate University women's hockey players Tara French (Truro, N.S.), Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) and Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) were named to the all-ECAC Hockey League teams it was announced earlier this evening at the league's annual banquet, which marks the start of the women's championship weekend.
 
French headlined the award winners, earning the conference's first Student-Athlete of the Year award, as well as a place on the third team.  Hunt earned second-team accolades and Stewart was named to the all-rookie team.
 
French leads the Raider defense in scoring for the fourth straight season, and is third in the league in defenseman scoring.  She holds the record for most goals tallied by a defender in a season with seven, topping the previous record of three.  French also set a record for most points recorded by a defender with 22, surpassing her record of 20 from last season.
 
She's played in 135 career games, scoring 12 goals and chipping in 60 assists for 72 points. She became Colgate's all-time scoring defender in January 2006, and currently ranks eighth on the all-time scoring list. Her 57 career assists rank third all time at Colgate.
 
As a molecular biology major, French is a two-time AWHCA National Scholar-Athlete of the Year and has made the ECAC All-Academic Team three times.
 
She's been named to an all-league team each year. She was all-rookie in 2003-04, honorable mention in 2004-05 and third-team in 2005-06. She was also selected to the ECACHL All-Star Team in November 2005.
 
Hunt has paced the Raiders in scoring for the second straight season.  She tied the single season mark for points and goals in a season with 39 and 20, respectively.
 
Hunt set a Colgate record for the most consecutive games scoring at least one point, putting together a string of 14 games where she collected 21 points.  She also recorded eight multiple-point games, four multiple-goal games and three multiple-assist games. 
 
As the team's leading face-off contender, she also set the Colgate record for most short-handed goals in a career with five, and had a team-best nine goals during special team play.
 
Hunt was named the USCHO National Offensive Player of the Week on November 14 and has been named to the ECACHL honor roll seven times this year. 
 
She currently ranks ninth on Colgate's all-time scoring list with 71 points and was named to the all-rookie team last season.
 
Stewart leads the freshman class in scoring with 27 points, off of 18 goals and nine assists.  Her 18 goals set a Colgate record for most tallies by a freshman. 
 
She ranks sixth among league rookies in scoring with 27 points, and her 23 points against conference teams is second-best among the freshmen.
 
Stewart leads the forwards in on-ice rating with a +12, and has scored seven power-play goals, one short-handed goal and tallied three game winners.
 
This season, Stewart recorded eight multiple-point games and was named ECACHL Rookie of the Week on two occasions and honorable mention once. 
 
Dartmouth swept the major awards, as Gillian Apps was named the Player of the Year, Sarah Parsons claimed Rookie of the Year, Carli Clemis nabbed Goalie of the Year honors and Coach of the Year honors went to Mark Hudak.  Yale University was the recipient of the Turfer Athletic Trophy.
