Colgate Field Hockey Heads To Holy Cross

ON TAP THIS WEEK:  Colgate will play its final road game of the year Saturday as it travels to take on Holy Cross.  Game time is set for a noon start in Worcester, Mass.

SERIES OVERVIEW:  Colgate holds a slim 12-11-1 lead over the Crusaders in the all-time series including winning the last two meetings.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW:  Colgate dropped a pair of road decisions to Cornell (2-1) and American (5-1).  Against Big Red, Peyton Hawkins netted her first collegiate goal as time expired in the first half on a penalty corner to knot the score at 1-1 at intermission.  Sarah Pedersen saved 12 shots to keep Colgate within striking distance. Laura Denenga scored her sixth goal of the year from Katelyn Nerbonne in the loss. 
 
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS:  The Crusaders come into the meeting with a 3-11 mark, 1-1 in league play.  Holy Cross upset Lafayette 2-1 in Easton, Pa in its last league matchup.  Since then, the Crusaders were downed by Columbia 1-0 on October 11 in NYC.  Courtney Callahan (8-1-17) is among the league leaders in goals and points.  Kelly Casey (3-11, 3.52 goals against avg., 96 saves) has gone the distance in goal for Holy Cross.  

NERBONNE CLIMBING UP THE SCORING CHARTS:  With her assist versus the Eagles, Katelyn Nerbonne moved into 10th on the all-time scoring charts at Colgate.  The senior, who has 23 goals, 14 assists for 60 points needs one more point to move into a five-way logjam for sixth.

WAITING TO MAKE A MOVE:  Mika Ella-Tang, who ranks tied for eighth in Colgate history. has 14 assists in her career and is one away from moving into sixth all time. Currently, she ranks in a tie for third in the Patriot League with five assists on the year. Goalie Sarah Pedersen needs one more win in net to move into fifth all-time in Colgate history.  The senior has 19 wins in her career.

LEADING THE PACK: Heading into this weekend’s play, goalie Sarah Pedersen leads the Patriot League in two statistical categories - saves and saves per game.  The senior has 102 saves on the year, 7.85 saves per outing.

DYNAMIC DUO: Colgate has scored 16 goals on the year, 11 of them coming from Katelyn Nerbonne and Laura Denenga.  Both players are ranked among the league leaders in several statistical categories.  Denenga is second in the Patriot League in shots on goal (44); tied for eighth in points (16), and is tied for fourth in goals scored (6), while Nerbonne is fourth in total points (15), shots (35), and is tied for seventh in goals scored (5).

FOTO INDUCTED IN CONNECTICUT FIELD HOCKEY HALL OF FAME: On October 4, Cathy Foto was enshrined with six others into the 10th Connecticut Field Hockey Hall of Fame at the Aqua Turf Country Club in Plantsville, Conn.  Foto, a native of West Hartford, Conn., will be joined by Leah Secondo (Honorary), Debbie Martin (umpire), Cathy Neary McGuirk (Branford HS Coach), Lea Ann Schmidt (former player at Ridgefield HS), Laura Mack (former player at Canton HS), and Lisa Griswold Lindley (former player at Northwestern and UMass) to form the Class of 2009.  Sixty two others have been inducted into the hall of fame in previous classes.
