Colgate Falls 4-2 at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, MASS. (10/17/09) – Alanna Sikorski scored three times as Holy Cross downed Colgate 4-2 in a Patriot League field hockey clash, Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders, who fell to 1-13 overall and 0-3 in league action, scored first as Courtney Burke (Rye, N.Y.) posted her second collegiate goal of the year from Laura Denenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) at 18:54. However, the Crusaders knotted the game 35 seconds later as Sikorski cashed in off a penalty corner set up. The junior scored her fourth of the year off a penalty corner at 33:34 to give the Crusaders the lead for good.
Rachael Miers extended the lead a minute later off a fast break from Nora Happny as Holy Cross ran into intermission holding a 3-1 advantage.
The Raiders cut the deficit to 3-2 as Katelyn Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) beat Kelly Casey on a penalty shot for her six goal of the year at 51:20. The goal allowed the senior to move into sixth all-time on the Colgate scoring list with 62 points passing Leslie Short, Brenda Baldanzi, Kristine Thomas, and Ashley Schneider and is now two points short of tying Gail Petteruti for fifth.
Sikorski cemented the victory for Holy Cross a minute later as the junior closed the game’s scoring. The Crusaders outshot Colgate 11-5 on the afternoon. Raider netminder Sarah Pedersen (State College, Pa.) made three saves.
Colgate returns home for its final two regular season games of the year beginning next Saturday against Bucknell. Game time is set for a 1 p.m. start at Tyler’s Field.
