LEWISBURG, Pa. (10/5/09) - Freshman Alec Goldstein (Bethesda, Md.) went 4-0 to win the Flight C draw as the Colgate men’s tennis team competed at the Bucknell Invitational this past weekend, Oct. 2-4.
Goldstein defeated UConn’s Matt Burns, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, followed by Bucknell’s Clark Bogle, 6-0, 6-1 and Fairleigh Dickinson’s Marco Jemersic, 3-6, 6-2 (10-6). He took down Wei Lin of UConn for the championship, defeating the fellow rookie, 6-4, 6-1. Also competing in Flight C was classmate Parker Lewis (Littleton, Colo.) who dropped his first match to FDU’s Ted Sergefors, 6-3, 7-5.
In Flight A action, Michael Yassky (New York City, N.Y.), Sean Spellburg (Naples, Fla.) and John Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) all lost their first round matches, with Spellberg winning two matches in the consolation round. He defeated George Mason’s Patrick Mulquin, 8-7 (8-6) and Bucknell’s Greg Maxson, 8-3.
Max Segan (New York City, N.Y.), Harry Jewett (Centennial, Colo.) and Graydon Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) all competed in the Men’s B draw. Segan downed GMU’s Arjun Sanghvi, 6-1, 7-6 in the first round before falling to FDU’s Mark Hemy, 6-1, 6-4. Jewett and Klassen dropped their first round matches, but Klassen pulled out two wins in the consolation rounds.
In doubles action, Nogueras and Klassen defeated UConn’s Dave Adams and Jai Yoon, 8-2 before falling to FDU’s Jemersic and Peter Skvarka, 8-4. In Flight B, Goldstein and Conor Feuille (San Francisco, Calif.) earned a bye the first round and defeated GMU’s Sangvhi and Sam Coster, 8-4, before falling to UConn’s Ricardo Cardona and Tom Cook, 8-4, in the quarterfinal round. Jewett and Lewis also received a bye in the first round, advancing to the final match-up where they also faced Cardona/Cook, falling 8-1 in the title game. The Colgate duo defeated GMU’s Karl Babin and Imran Nayeem, 8-0 and FDU’s Mark and Dominic Hemy, 8-6.
