Women's Soccer Weekly Release #12: NCAA Tournament

This Week – Fri., Nov. 13th, 7:30 p.m. – NCAA Tournament

The Raiders will travel to University Park, Pa. to take on the No. 16 Penn State Nittany Lions at Jeffrey Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  Colgate will face Penn State on Friday, Nov. 13th at 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the St. John’s/Virginia match slated for 5 p.m. The winner of each game will face each other on Sunday, Nov. 15th. Tickets are priced at $7 for adults and $3 for students and youth.
 
Scouting Penn State
The 16th ranked Nittany Lions received an automatic bid into the tournament after winning the Big Ten Championship for the 12th consecutive season. Penn State enters the weekend with an overall record of 12-5-2, including an 8-1-1 mark in the Big Ten conference. The conference champions will look to extend their nine game unbeaten streak which includes eight wins and one tie. Penn State’s last loss was in overtime, 3-2, against Michigan State back on Sept. 27. Three of their remaining four losses came against ranked teams, including Wake Forest, West Virginia and Florida State. The Nittany Lions only other tie this year came against Colgate’s fellow Patriot League team, Bucknell, which held Penn State scoreless throughout regulation and two overtime periods. 
 
Junior forward Danielle Toney leads Penn State in goals scored with 12 and is tied with senior Katie Schoepfer in points, each with 30 this season. Schoepfer has 11 goals and eight assists while Toney adds six assists to her team-high goal amount. Freshman midfielder Christine Nairn leads the Nittany Lions in assists with nine, adding on seven goals for 23 points this season. Head coach Erica Walsh is in her third season at the helm of the Penn State women’s soccer program. Walsh holds a 34-12-2 overall record with the Nittany Lions, including a 17-3-0 mark in the Big Ten. 
 
Last Time Out
The Colgate women’s soccer team claimed a league-best 11th Patriot League Championship defeating American University 1-0 in the final minutes of double-overtime.  The Raiders were crowned both the regular season and tournament champions for the first time since 2004. Sophomore Monica Jensen (Boxborough, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal to push the Raiders to victory in the 108th minute of play, preventing the game from being decided on penalty kicks. Freshman Jillian Kinter (Newburyport, Mass.) had an assist on the game-winner, while rookie goalkeeper Ashley Walsh (Cicero, N.Y.) made four saves to keep the Eagles off the board.
 
Last Time vs. Penn State
The Nittany Lions hold a 2-0-0 advantage in the all-time series against Colgate. The Raiders last faced Penn State on Sept. 26, 2007, a 5-0 loss at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. Schoepfer and Toney combined for three goals. 
  
Primetime Performer
Colgate’s Monica Jensen was named one of CollegeSoccer360.com’s Primetime Performers of the Week for the week of Nov. 2-8. Jensen scored the game-winning goal in the final two minutes of the second overtime in the Patriot League Championship game.

Patriot League Champs
The Raiders claimed their league-high 11th Patriot League Championship this past weekend after defeating Navy, 1-0 in overtime, followed by another one-point overtime win against American in the championship game. Monica Jensen and Elise Amioka (South Berwick, Maine) each scored their first collegiate goals in the victories. With the win, the Raiders earned their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Colgate’s last appearance was back in 2004 when they upset #15 Arizona to advance to the second round. 
 
League Awards
The All-Patriot League teams and Major Award winners were announced earlier this week, with Colgate placing four student-athletes on an All-League team with one other winning one of the four major awards.  Goalie Ashley Walsh was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year after starting in goal for all 18 games of the Raiders matches. 
 
Senior Jillian Arnault (Clay, N.Y.) and junior Calista Victor (Seattle, Wash.) were named to the All-League First Team, while senior Liz Polido (Stow, Mass.) and freshman Jillian Kinter were both selected to the Second Team.   
 
Leading the Way
Freshman Jillian Kinter leads the Raiders offensively with four goals and three assists for 11 points. Jillian Arnault and Avery Atkins (Dallas, Texas) both sit in second with three goals and one assist, while Anna Baldwin (Woodbury, Conn.) and Alyssa Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) have each contributed five points. Baldwin has two goals and one assist while Manoogian has three assists and one goal. Ashley Walsh’s 9-6-3 record including six shutouts leads the Raiders goalkeeping.
 
Preseason Picks
The Raiders were selected to finish second according to the Patriot League Preseason Poll as chosen by conference coaches and sports information directors. The Raiders collected the most first-place votes with seven but fell just short in total points with 83, just seven less than the No. 1 team, Navy. 
 
The Brawn File
Head coach Kathy Brawn is in her 19th season with the Raiders.  Brawn hails as the Colgate women’s soccer all-time winningest coach with 228 career wins and has collected ten of the Raiders eleven Patriot League Tournament titles, the most for any Patriot League coach.  
 
Senior Day
The Raiders honored seven seniors during their final regular season game against Bucknell. These seniors included : Jessica Bitsack (Mendham, N.J.), Liz Polido, Vera Carrington (Marietta, Ga.), Jillian Arnault, Christine Walker (Renton, Wash.), Jamie Herrmann (Seattle, Wash.) and Carrie Glass (Alpharetta, Ga.).
