HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/12/09)
-- Senior guard Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.) scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed four rebounds as the Colgate men’s basketball team completed exhibition play with an 63-52 victory over Medaille College at Cotterell Court Thursday night.

Roemer, who missed the entire 2008-09 season due to injury, shot 6-13 from the field, including 3-7 from three-point range to lead all scorers.

Colgate opened the game on a 5-0 run, but Medaille would take a 17-16 lead with 11:08 remaining in the first half thanks to 10 points from Ricky Reed. Back-and-forth play ensued for the rest of the half, with neither team taking more than a four-point lead. Colgate scored the last two baskets of the half to take a 30-27 lead into intermission.

In the second half, Medaille closed Colgate’s lead to 33-32 after a three-pointer from Chris Moscato, but Colgate then went on a 23-10 run to put the game away. During that stretch, sophomore forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) scored eight of his 15 points on the night, including three consecutive baskets early in the run. Gyawu’s three consecutive baskets were followed by a thunderous dunk from sophomore center Nick Pascale (Dewitt, N.Y.) after he cleaned the class off a missed layup.

Senior forward Ben Jonson (Dallas, Texas) led both teams with 11 rebounds, and Pascale came off the bench to grab eight boards. For Medaille, Keith Hack led the Mavericks with 16 points, while Reed chipped in 13.

Colgate opens the 110th season of varsity basketball with a trip to Storrs, Conn., for the Dicks Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. The Raiders play No. 12 Connecticut on Monday, Nov. 16, the game is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, and will be televised on ESPNU.
