Crew Teams Compete at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, PA. (5/11/09) -   The Colgate men’s and women’s rowing teams competed at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.  Both teams entered two boats into the race.

The women entered the Varsity 4 and Novice 4 boats.  The V4 finished 14th of 37 boats in their race with a time of 5:11.59.  The first 18 boats advanced to the semifinal race.  In their semifinal heat, the women placed 6th with a time of 7:56.655, but failed to qualify for the final race as only the first two teams advanced.  In the Varsity 4 boat were coxswain Allison Patchen (Pittsford, N.Y.), Annabelle Glass (Vancouver, B.C.), Vicky Hulit (Rye, N.Y.), Lauren Schmetterling (Moorestown, N.J.) and Elspeth Monigle (Denver, Colo.) in bow. 

 

The women’s Novice 4 boat raced in the eighth event of the day on Friday, finishing 20th of 53 boats with a time of 5:40.09.  The women were just 1 second short of qualifying for the semifinals, as the top 18 teams moved on.  Heading the novice boat was coxswain Jillian Anderson (East Walpole, N.Y.) along with Kirsten Kellstrom (Chatham, N.J.), Shannon Jackson (Roswell, Ga.), Lauren Davis (Thornhill, Ont.) and Katie Johnescu (York, Pa.) in bow. 

 

The men’s team also entered a Novice 4 boat along with the Varsity 8.  Both boats advanced to their respective semifinal rounds, with the Novice 4 getting the chance to race in the final.  The novice boat finished their first race placing 7th out of 48 boats with a time of 4:48.385, where the first 18 boats continued on.  In their semifinal heat, the men finished 1st with a time of 6:44.32, earning the chance to advance to the trophy round as on of the top two finishers in their heat.  In the final race, the men earned 4th place with a time of 7:58.298.  In the novice boat consisted of coxswain May Bayer (Boston, Mass.), Gavin Henriquez (Northport, N.Y.), Robbie Bickhart (Villanova, Pa.), Kenley Unruh (Ellensberg, Wash.) and Ben Jones (Bryn Mawr, Pa.).

 

In the Varsity 8 race, the men placed 10th in their first race on Friday, finishing with a time of 4:07.27.  In their semifinal heat, the men came in 4th place, with a time of 5:48.929.  In the V8 boat were Chris Monterosso (Staten Island, N.Y.), Kurt Miller (Devon, Pa.), Sam Walker (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Parker Paulin (Forsyth, Ill.), Mark Robson (Baltimore, Md.), Willie Fox (New Canaan, Conn.), Eddie Gastel (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), James Clinton (Vancouver, B.C.) and Peter Leahey (Mercer Island, Wash.).
