Men Compete at NYS Collegiate Rowing Championships

Whitney Point, N.Y. (5/4/09): This weekend eight Colgate rowers and two coxswains competed in the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships. The Raiders entered a boat into the men’s varsity four event as well as the men’s novice four event. Both boats placed first in their races.

 

During Saturday’s heat race, coxswain Kristen Stonehill (Litchfield, Conn.) and rowers James Clinton (Vancouver, Canada), Matt Woodrow (Glenview, Ill.), Marc Cassone (Plattsburgh, N.Y.), and Oliver Jensen (Geneva, Switz.) won easily, coming in five seconds before second place Genesee College with a time of 7:01.35. In the event’s three heats no boat had a better time.

 

In the men’s novice four heat, Colgate beat the second place boat by thirteen seconds with a time of 7:10.72. In the boat were coxswain May Bayer (Boston, Mass.) and Gavin Henriquez (Northport, N.Y.), Rob Bickhart (Villanova, Pa.), Kenley Unruh (Ellensberg, Wash.), and Ben Jones (Bryn Mawr, Pa.).

 

In Sunday’s grand final events, Colgate continued its domination. During the men’s varsity four final, Colgate again won easily, beating West Point Military Academy by seven seconds, recording a final time of 7:02.30. In the novice men’s four final, Colgate won its second gold. The Raiders finished in 7:15.22, again beating out a West Point boat, this time by five seconds.

 

This weekend the crew team will travel to Philadelphia, PA to compete in the annual Dad Vail Regatta.
