Men's Tennis Wraps Up Play at the Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. (9/13/09) - TheColgate men’s tennis team opened its fall season at the Cornell fall Outdoor Invitational this weekend, Sept. 11-Sept. 13. Players from eight universities participated in the tournament.
 
Harry Jewett, Michael Yassky, Graydon Klassen, Sean Spellberg and John Nogueras all saw action in the Flight A Singles. Jewett, Yassky, Nogueras lost in the first round while Klassen and Spellberg advanced to the next round only to be dropped by Stony Brook’s Ivan Rummel in 3 sets 5-7 6-4 (10-8) and Cornell’s Jeremy Feldman 6-1, 6-1, respectively.
 
Jewett was the lone raider to participate in the Flight A consolation Singles. He was defeated by Lehigh’s Matt Savran in the first round of play.
 
Additionally Yassky, Spellberg, and Klassen all competed in the Flight A consolation Singles 2. Yassky made it to round 2 by default and Klassen advanced to the next round as well, defeating Enric Larregola of St. Bonaventure 8-6. Both Yassy and Klassen lost in this round to Jon File of Cornell and Halvar Dill of Stony Brook, respectively.
 
Five members of the Colgate Men’s Tennis team played in the Flight B singles: Parker Lewis, Alex Goldstein, Max Segan, Connor Feuille and John Beam. Goldstein, Feuille, and Beam lost in the first round of play while Segan and Lewis advanced to round two however both were defeated
 
Alex Goldstein won the Flight B consolation Singles in four matches of play, defeating Stony Brook’s Max Sztabholz 8-5, 8-4 in the Championship round.  Feuille and Beam also competed in the Flight B consolation singles.
 
Lewis and Segan participated in the Flight B consolation Singles 2. Lewis advanced to the second round by dropping Cornell’s Richard Offutt. Lewis then lost the second round to Jarrod Karson of Cornell. Segan was defeated in the first round of play by Ryan Krueger of Lehigh.
 
In Doubles action,John Nogueras/Graydon Klassen and Michael Yassky/Harry Jewettboth participated in the Flight A Doubles. Both teams fell in the first round of play.
 
Colgate had two teams participate in the B doubles matches: Lewis/Goldstein and Spellberg/ Beam. Spellberg/Beam defeated Karson of Cornell and Rodrigues of Binghamton. Lewis/Goldstein fell to Army’s Bruno Lucievero and Josh Krieter. Spellberg/Beam were defeated by Matt Kuwamoto and Clark Shelton of the Army in the second round of action.
 
The Colgate men’s tennis team is back in action on Sept. 18 –Sept. 20 at BrownUniversity in Providence, Rhode Island.
