PROVIDENCE, R.I. (9/17/07) – The Colgate University men's tennis team competed in the Northeast Invitational this weekend at Brown University. A total of twelve teams participated in this tournament: Boston College, Brandeis, Brown, Bryant, Bucknell, Colgate, Dartmouth, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, UCONN, and Villanova.
A total of seven singles flights and three doubles flights were played over the course of this weekend.
In the #1 flight freshman Graydon Klasson was defeated by Brown’s Skate Gorham. In Flight #2 action, senior Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) was dropped by Andrew Malizia of Dartmouth in the first round of play. Yassky went on to finish in 13th place defeating Marco Jemersic of FDU. In Flight #3, senior John Nogueras (Parkland, Fl.) defeated Villanova’s Mike Taylor, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3. He was then defeated in the second round of play, falling to UConn’s Scott Warden, 6-4,6-4.
Raiders Sean Spellburg (Naples, Fl.) and Harry Jewett both participated in flight # 4 Singles. Spellburg and Jewett each dropped their first game, with Spellburg downing Boston College’s Brian Garber, 6-4, 6-1 before falling Hofstra’s John Disley. Both Max Segan and Alec Goldstein saw action in the #5 flight. Parker Lewis came in 13th place in the #6 flight singles. John Beam also saw action in this flight. Conner Feuille (San Francisco, CA) was the lone raider in the #7 flight. Feuille defeated Bryant’s Stephen Tolila, 6-2, 6-1, before falling to Bucknell’s Clark Bogle, 6-1, 6-2 in the semi-final round.
Nogueras/ Klassen had three wins in the Flight #1 Doubles. They were defeated in the semi-final round by Brown. Yassky/Jewett and Beam/Spellburg had wins in the flight #2 Doubles. Additionally, Yassky/Jewett finished in 13th. Both Segan/ Goldstein and Lewis/ Feuille advanced to the semi final round in flight #3 Doubles. Segan/Goldstein and Lewis/Feuille were defeated by BC’s Skinner/ Ankner and Dartmouth’s Friedman/ DeChatellus.
The Raiders will return to the court at the ITA’s in Hanover, New Hampshire on October 14, 2009.
