Women Finish Play at Eastern Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. (9/28/09) -   The Colgate women’s tennis team wrapped up play at the West Point Eastern Tennis Invitational this past weekend, Sept. 25-27.  One of the largest fall tournaments in the northeast, 30 teams participated in the annual event this year, including fellow Patriot League opponents, Army and Bucknell, as well as regional rivals Syracuse and Cornell. 
 
In first singles play, senior Samantha Inacker (Lake Forest, Ill.) fell to Providence’s Marisela Aviles in the round of 32, but advanced to the first singles consolation rounds.  Inacker received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, and defeated Seton Hall’s Elizabeth Verow, 8-3, to advance to the semifinal round.  In the semi’s, Inacker fell to Binghamton’s Lauren Bates, 8-1, giving the senior a 2-2 record on the weekend.  
 
Fellow senior Cameron Williams (Winnetka, Ill.) competed in the second singles flight, finishing 0-2 on the weekend after falling to Sacred Heart’s Darcy Demers, 6-2, 6-1, and Stonybrook’s Paola Rodolfi.
 
Sophomore Stephanie Brown (Mendham, N.J.) defeated Niagara’s Raquel Solis, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, in the first round of play to advance to the round of 16 in the championship bracket.  Brown fell to Fairleigh Dickinson’s Julia Prantl, 6-2, 6-0, in the second round of play.
 
 In the fourth singles flight, senior Jackie Stimmel (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) dropped her first round match to Rhode Island’s Christen Cadigan, 6-2, 6-4, before advancing to the semifinal round of the consolation bracket.  Stimmel received a bye in the first round of the No. 4 singles consolation before defeating St. Bonaventure’s Kalia Garcia-Rojas, 8-2.  In the semifinal match-up, Stimmel fell to Seton Hall’s Courtney Kilarsi, 8-5.
 
In doubles action, freshmen duo of Asia Lamar (Olympia Fields, Ill.) and Meredith Rock (Kansas City, Mo.) went 0-2 at first doubles, falling to FDU’s Dzang Ferhatbegoric and Egzona Morina, 8-4, and NJIT’s Anine Lofdal and Isha Toor, 8-5.  
 
Second doubles pair, Alexi Aberant (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Stephanie Bender (Amityville, N.Y.) defeated Siena’s Kellie Scullin and Lauren Garbade, 8-4, before falling to host Army’s Kristen Beehler and Audrey Hansen, 8-2.  The duo also competed against Fairfield’s Gretchen Amberg and Nikki Jackson, falling 8-3, and Pittsburgh’s Melissa Bostwick and Sarah Dieffenbach, dropping a close match, 8-6.
