HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/8/09)- The Colgate Athletic Department will proudly induct six new members into its Athletic Hall of Honor on Friday, September 11, 2009. The Hall of Presidents will host the induction as the new members of the Class of 2009 are honored.
The Class of 2009 inductees are Larry Bossidy ’57, baseball; Angela Chongris ’98, lacrosse; Andy McDonald ’00, ice hockey; Tara McGoff ’99, softball; Eugene Robinson ’85, football; and Kelly Tyrrell ’00, soccer.
Larry Bossidy, Class of 1957
Larry has been referred to as the best Colgate pitcher in the last two decades. He lettered in 55-56-57 in baseball, and played on the 1955 team that advanced to the College World Series in Omaha. During the World Series, Larry led Colgate to a 6-4 victory against Southern California.
With 229.7 innings pitched, 150 strikeouts, and seventy-four strikeouts in 1955 alone, Larry is undoubtedly one of the greatest pitchers in Colgate history.
Angela Chongris, Class of 1998
Angela was a talented lacrosse player, lettering four years in her sport.
In her senior year, she was named co-captain of the 1998 team and was elected as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. Also in 1998 she was voted Colgate’s Outstanding Attack Player and was ranked seventh in the nation in assists with 1.92 per game. Additionally she led the Patriot League in scoring and for her career she scored 149 goals and added 55 assists to finish as the school’s second all-time leading scorer.
In 1997 as a junior, Angela was an All-American honorable mention by the United States Women’s Lacrosse Association, and third team all American by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. She was also a member of the first team all- North Region, a feat that she accomplished three times during her career at Colgate. Angela was also awarded Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 1995.
Andy McDonald, Class of 2000
Andy is the first Colgate player to put his name on the Stanley Cup as a member of the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Andy currently competes for the St. Louis Blues.
Over his four-year collegiate career, McDonald totaled 67 goals and 88 helpers for 155 points in 137 games. He scored 19 points (9-10-19) as a freshman and increased his point total every season, scoring 32 points as a sophomore (13-19-22) and 46 points as a junior (20-26-46), and 25-33-58 in 34 games as a senior.
McDonald was named a Hobey Baker Award Finalist; an honor that is awarded to the top U.S. Collegiate Player, and was also named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year in addition to being selected to the All-ECAC first team. McDonald led the ECAC in points, goals and assists (16-20-36) and had the second highest points per game average in the nation (1.71).
Andy was also named ECAC Player of the Week and put together a nine game winning streak from October 30-December 11 during his junior season. During his sophomore and freshmen years at Colgate, Andy was also an honorable mention All-ECAC Selection and tied for fourth in the ECAC’s voting for Rookie of the Year accolades.
Tara McGoff, Class of 1999
Tara was a standout softball pitcher during her career at Colgate. She was a two-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, a four-time first team all-league pitcher, and was named to the Patriot League all-Decade team.
She is currently Colgate’s career record-holder in wins (59), ERA (1.74), completed games (89), strikeouts (476), shutouts (16), and at bats (501). Additionally she is the Patriot League’s career leader in games pitched (116), games started (103), completed games (89), victories (59), and innings pitched (744).
During her senior year Tara was Co-Captain of the Raiders softball team, and was selected as a first team all-Patriot League Player while breaking the school’s record for most games pitched in a season, and being nominated as co-MVP. As a junior, Tara was selected as co-Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, First team all-Patriot League pitcher and Second team all-Patriot League outfielder.
Additionally, as a sophomore, Tara was the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, a First team all-League Pitcher, The nation’s 29th ranked pitcher with a 0.99 earned run average, the Patriot League’s Tournament co-MVP, and she led the league in ERA’s. In her Rookie year, Tara was a First team all-Patriot League pitcher, and a co-recipient of the Colgate MVP award.
Eugene Robinson, Class of 1985
Eugene lettered three years in football at Colgate during ‘82, ‘83, ‘84. During his senior year, he made 52 tackles and two interceptions and he was a two-year starter for the Red Raiders in his sophomore and junior seasons making over 30 tackles.
After Colgate, Robinson played the 1985 season with the Seattle Seahawks where he was nominated as the Most Valuable Player in the NFL, and named to the Sports Illustrated All-NFL First-Team. In 1991, 1992 and 1995 during his career in Seattle, he was named NFL?Man of the Year.
Eugene was also named to the All-Pro team in 1993 and 1998 and helped lead the two teams, Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers to the super bowl. He was Super Bowl XXXI Champion with the Green Bay Packers.
Kelly Tyrrell, Class of 2000
Kelly lettered four years in varsity soccer as the Colgate women’s goalie.
During her freshmen and sophomore year the National Soccer Coaches Association of America elected her third team all-Northeast Region. She was also nominated first team all-Patriot League three times during her career at Colgate. Additionally, in 1999 Kelly was voted the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the year.
Kelly was also a three-time Colgate MVP and led the Raiders to four Patriot League titles, one ECAC championship, and three straight NCAA Tournament berths. She also led the league’s goalkeepers during both her freshman and sophomore campaigns, not allowing a single goal in conference play.
Kelly is also responsible for 10.5 of Colgate’s 11 shutouts during her rookie season, which set a Colgate record and in her senior season she made 187 saves, setting a Colgate record.
