Colgate Men Fall to Cornell in Swimming

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/16/2010) – Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.), Dan Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.), and Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.) were all double winners, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Cornell downed Colgate 193-100 in men’s swimming and diving action, Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.
The Raiders, who fell to 0-6 on the year, won four events on the afternoon. Hadjipateras led Colgate to a first and second place effort in the 100 fly. The sophomore touched with a winning time of 1:57.44 ahead of teammate Doug Parks (New Canaan, Conn.), who finished with a 2:01.24.
Sweeney commanded the top spot in the 50 free (21.61), while Rutkowski claimed top honors in the 100 fly (52.37).
Colgate won the last event of the afternoon as the foursome of Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Rutkowski, Sweeney and Hadjipateras finished with a winning time of 1:25.99 in the 200 free relay.
Aside from Parks’ runner-up effort in the 200 fly, Colgate received second place efforts from Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) in the 500 free (4:51.23) and the team of Sweeney, Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.), Rutkowski and Gniewek placed second in the opening event – the 400 medley relay (3:37.43).
Colgate returns to action next Saturday as it travels to face Binghamton. The meet starts at 1 p.m. in Vestal.
