VESTAL, N.Y. (1/23/2010) – Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.Y.), Kim Siembieda (Narbeth, Pa.) and Kim Pilka (Great Falls, Va.) were all double winners as Colgate downed Binghamton 166.5-131.5 in women’s swimming and diving action, Saturday at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center. The Bearcats posted a 197-103 victory over the Raiders in men’s action.
In all, the Raiders won 10 events and took the top two finishes in four races. The Colgate women improved to 5-3 overall.
Derlath claimed the 200 free (1:57.96) and led a one-two Colgate finish in the 200 back (2:09.62), while Siembieda posted an individual victory in the 100 back (1:00.98) and then teamed with Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.), Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) to register a winning time of 1:37.62 in the final event – the 200 free relay. That time bested the former pool record if 1:38.86 set by Lafayette in 2007. Pilka was victorious in both the one-meter (232.50) and three-meter (257.25) diving events.
Colgate received its other victories from Erika Mortenson (Chesterfield, Mo.) in the 1000 free (10:47.46), Sarah Button (Mendham, N.J.) in the 100 free (54.75), Maggie White (Baltimore, Md.) in the 200 breast (2:29.26) and Caitie Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the 200 IM (2:12.35).
In men’s action, Colgate claimed two firsts on the afternoon. Sophomore Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.) touched with a winning time of 1:59.67 in the 200 fly and then teamed with Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.), Cameron Voell (Little Silver, N.J.) and Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) to post a winning time of 1:27.76 in the 200 free relay.
The Raiders combined for 10 second place efforts against the Bearcats. Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) picked up a pair of seconds in the 1000 free (10:04.23) and 200 breast (2:19.16); Dan Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) was second in both the 50 free (21.99) and 100 fly (52.39), while Gniewek touched with times of 54.03 in the 100 back and 48.30 in the 100 free en route to runner-up finishes. Other second place efforts came from Nick Pawlush (Hummelstown, Pa.) in the 200 free (1:50.22), Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.) in the 100 breast (1:02.07), Casey Powers (Chappaqua, N.Y.) in the 500 free (4:55.27), and Tyler Makepeace (Wallingford, Conn.) in one-meter diving (224.78).
Both teams return to action Sunday morning as they host UMass. The meet is set for an 11:00 a.m. start at Lineberry Natatorium.
