HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/24/2010) – Colgate claimed four first place efforts, two by Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.), but it wasn’t enough as UMass handed the Raiders a 182-106 defeat, Sunday afternoon in men’s swimming and diving action at Lineberry Natatorium.
Hadjipateras, who was a double winner in Saturday’s meet at Binghamton, once again claimed two events. The sophomore posted a winning time of 53.13 to win the 100 fly and then teamed with Dan Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.), Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.) to register a winning time of 3:10.40 in the 400 free relay. Hadjipateras missed out on a third victory in the 200 fly as he placed second, only .14 seconds behind the winner from UMass.
Colgate’s other two wins came from Gniewek and Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.). Gniewek, also a double winner, won the 100 free by nearly .5 seconds after ripping off a time of 47.86., while Healy touched a winning time of 1:59.62 in the individual medley.
The Raiders had three second place efforts aside from Hadjipateras’ effort in the 200 fly. Nick Burkus (Weston, Mass.) placed second in three-meter diving (230.62), while Dan Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) was credited with second place points in the 200 IM (2:06.27). The foursome of Hadjipateras, Gniewek, Rutkowski and Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.) finished second in the 400 medley relay (3:35.65).
Colgate returns to action Saturday afternoon as it hosts Army and Lafayette for Senior Day. The event starts at 1 p.m. at Lineberry Natatorium.
