ORLANDO, Fla. (3/16/10) - The Colgate men’s and women’s tennis teams each earned a 6-1 win today against Hartford in their first spring break match in Orlando, Fla. With the wins, both squads improve their overall record to 5-3.
“I was very pleased with both teams’ efforts,” commented head coach Bobby Pennington. “They played very clean, were tough mentally, and both move to 5-3 on the year.”
In men’s action, senior Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) downed Hartford’s Aneil Bhalla, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 position. Classmate John Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) defeated Marco Neves in the No. 3 slot, 6-3, 4-6 (6). The Raiders lone singles loss came at the second singles position as senior Phil Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn.) was bested by the Hawks’ Josh Isaacson, 7-6, 6-3.
Rookie Alec Goldstein (Bethesda, Md.) took down Hartford’s Eric Floum in the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-1, while sophomore Sean Spellberg (Naples, Fla.) downed Edgardo Ureta in straight sets in fifth singles. Junior Ruslan Goussiantnikov (Needham, Mass.) rounded out Colgate’s singles play, defeating Aaron Kooden, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot.
The Raiders won all three doubles matches, led by Bernasek and Goussiantnikov at the No. 1 position. The top duo downed Hartford’s Bhalla and Neves, 8-2. Partners Nogueras and Yassky bested Isaacson and Floum, 8-2 at second doubles, while Spellberg and Connor Feuille (San Francisco, Calif.) blanked Koden and Filip Miletic, 8-0 at the No. 3 slot.
The men’s squad will be back in action on Thursday, March 18 when they take on Rollins at 3 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
