ORLANDO, Fla. (3/16/10) - The Colgate men’s and women’s tennis teams each earned a 6-1 win against Hartford this afternoon in their first spring break match in Orlando, Fla. With the wins, both squads improve their overall record to 5-3.
“I was very pleased with both teams’ efforts,” commented head coach Bobby Pennington. “They played very clean, were tough mentally, and both move to 5-3 on the year.”
The Raiders started off the day by earning all three doubles victories to gain an early advantage. The senior duo of Elise DeRose (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Cameron Williams (Winnetka, Ill.) downed Hartford, 8-1, in the No. 1 spot. Classmate Samantha Inacker (Lake Forest, Ill.) and junior Stephanie Bender (Amityville, N.Y.) defeated the Hawks at second doubles, 8-1. Rounding out doubles action for the Raiders were partners senior Jackie Stimmel (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Meridith Rock (Kansas City, Mo.), earned a win in the No. 3 position, also by a score of 8-1.
In singles action, Colgate’s Inacker bested Margaret Sabatino, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 spot, while Williams outlasted the Hawks’ Nicole Haynal, 7-5, 2-6 (10-5) at third singles. The Raiders lone singles loss came at the top spot, as Livia Blasque bested DeRose, 7-5, 6-1.
Stimmel nearly blanked Amanda Epstein at the No. 4 position, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Sophomore Stephanie Brown (Mendham, N.J.) downed Kaitlin Lennon, 6-2, 6-2 at fifth singles, while Rock defeated Margaret Potkay in straight sets at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The women will be back in action tomorrow, March 17, when they take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 6:30 in Orlando, Fla.
