BETHANY BEACH, Del. (3/21/10) - Behind a strong 54-hole performance from Will Delano (New Canaan, Conn.), the Colgate golf team finished ninth out of 14 in the George Washington Invitational played at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, Delaware.
Delano, who finished tied for 29th in the tournament that fielded 96 golfers, shot a three round score of 224 that included two rounds of 76 and a 72, ending the weekend plus eight.
Just six golfers separated Delano and Colgate sophomore Josh Spellman (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) who posted a career best opening round 71, then followed with a 76 and a 79 for a 226 and a plus 10.
Dave Ake (Topsfield, Mass.), Ben Jessen (West Simsbury, Conn.) and Neil Thompson (Sherborn, Mass.) rounded out the five-man team that helped the Raiders to a final score of 920 in a tournament that took the best four scores out of each five-man squad.
Colgate also had two individuals place in the tournament, with Chase Williams (Columbus, Ohio), and Nick Parry (Washington, D.C.) shooting 234 (79, 79, 76) and 252 (81, 94, 77) respectively.
The Raiders edged out fellow Patriot League opponent Holy Cross by 10 strokes at the end of the weekend, also beating Mount St. Mary’s, Hofstra, Niagara and Duquense.
The University of Missouri took first place in both the overall team standings and had the Most Valuable Player of the weekend in Chris Johnson who shot 199 (66, 68, 65).
The Raiders have next weekend off before going on the road for three straight tournaments beginning with a one-day event in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on April 5.
