WEST POINT, N.Y. (3/28/10) - The Colgate women’s tennis squad defeated Patriot League opponent, Lafayette, 6-1, to earn their first conference win on Sunday afternoon in West Point, N.Y. The Raiders are now 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the league.
"I was really proud of our ladies today, as they won decisively," noted head coach Bobby Pennington. "It was a totaly team effort from top to bottom."
The women won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and gain an early lead in the game. Seniors Elise DeRose (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Cameron Williams (Winnetka, Ill.) defeated Lafayette’s Kelsey Grad and Caitlin Gordon, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Classmate Samantha Inacker (Lake Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Stephanie Bender (Amityville, N.Y.) downed Rachel Rohinsky and Emily DeLuca at the second doubles spot, 8-3, while Stephanie Brown (Mendham, N.J.) and Asia Lamar (Olympia Heights, Ill.) dropped Katherine Churchalis and Frawley Barton, 8-2, at third doubles.
The Raiders earned wins at second through sixth singles after dropping the No. 1 singles match. Inacker claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win against Rohinsky in the No. 2 spot, while Williams defeated Gordon, 6-4, 6-3, at third singles. Brown downed Churchalis, 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles and freshman Merideth Rock (Kansas City, Mo.) outlasted DeLuca in the No. 5 position, 7-5, 7-5. Lamar nearly blanked Barton at sixth singles, earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The women will be back in action this Saturday, April 3 when they take on Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa.
