Men's Basketball Holds Annual Awards Banquet
MBB
HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/30/10) – The Colgate men’s basketball team held its annual awards banquet, Monday at the Seven Oaks Clubhouse. The program honored the team’s two seniors, and featured the presentation of the five major awards.

Colgate’s two seniors honored were Ben Jonson (Dallas, Texas) and Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.). They were presented with framed jerseys and watches as a small token of appreciation for their years of competition.

Roemer won the Bob Duffy-Tucker Neale Award, given annually to the team’s most valuable player. Roemer finished third in the Patriot League with 18.8 points per game, an average that placed him among the NCAA top-50. He also averaged 5.7 rebounds for the season and was named to the all-Patriot League first-team and the 2010 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District Second Team.

Roemer concluded his career in the top-15 in Patriot League history in scoring and among the top-10 in three-pointers made. Roemer became just the fifth player in Colgate history with 1,600 points, and first since Adonal Foyle with 1,600 points and 400 rebounds.

The Hasan Brown Award, given to the player who best typifies the spirit of Colgate basketball through his hard work, intensity and commitment was awarded to sophomore forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.), while Jonson won the Jack Mitchell Award and Coaches Award. The Jack Mitchell Award goes to the senior who combines the best of both academics and athletics, while the Coaches Award is given to the best defensive player.

The Jack Bruen Award, given to the most improved player, was presented to junior Joe Hoban (West Chester, Pa.). Hoban finished second in assists and steals for Colgate.

Players recognized during the banquet, as statistical category leaders were Roemer for free throw percentage and rebounding, Gyawu for field goal percentage, and freshman Mitch Rolls (Coffeyville, Kan.) for assists.
