PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (4/12/10) - The Colgate men’s rowing team competed at the Knecht Cup this past weekend April 10-11, earning two second place finishes, one in each the Novice Four and Varsity Four races.
The men’s Novice Four boat advanced to the Grand Final race after placing second in both their first heat and semi-final races. The squad’s best time of the day came in their semi-final race with a time of 6:59.79. Colgate came out of the Final with a second place finish after earning a time of 7:10.45, just 11 seconds behind first-place Mercyhurst. Racing in the novice boat were freshmen Owen Myers (Winnetka, Ill.), Pierre Gross (Acton, Mass.), Spencer Brooks, Stephen Dickinson (Malvern, Pa.) and Rob Hendrickson as coxswain.
The Raiders Varsity Two, raced by senior Marc Cassone (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) and sophomore Ben Jones (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), earned a best time on the day of 7:42.80 during the semi-final round. The duo earned third place finishes in both their opening heat and semi-final race to qualify for the Grand Final. The Raiders finished sixth in the final race with a time of 7:50.17. Mercyhurst was the top team in the event followed by Drexel, Fairfield, Penn State and Pittsburgh.
The men’s final race was the Varsity Four, in which the Raiders also advanced to the Grand Final after finishing second in their heat with a time of 6:47.40. The Raiders placed second in the Final with a time of 6:42.79, just seconds behind the top team, Philadelphia which finished in 6:38.47. Also competing in the final were Boston College, Temple, Iona and Marist. Sophomore May Bayer (Boston, Mass.) was coxswain in the boat with juniors James Clinton (Vancouver, B.C.), Sam Walker (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Matt Woodrow (Glenview, Ill.) and sophomore Robbie Bickhart (Villanova, Pa.) rowing.
Up next for the Raiders is the Seneca Cup scheduled for Saturday, April 17, in Geneva, N.Y.
