POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (4/12/10) -   The Colgate men’s and women’s tennis teams closed out their regular seasons at Marist this past Sunday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The women defeated the Red Foxes, 5-2, to improve to 8-6 overall, while the men who were blanked, 7-0, by Marist falls to 9-7 overall.

 

The women started off earning the doubles point after winning both the second and third doubles matches. Senior Samantha Inacker (Lake Forest, Ill.) and junior Stephanie Bender (Amityville, N.Y.) defeated Kayla O’Donovan and Joanna Macaluso, 8-4, in the No. 2 position while partners Jackie Stimmel (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Merideth Rock (Kansas City, Mo.) downed Jeannie Lukin and Retta Byron, 8-5, at third doubles.

 

In singles action, the Raiders won the second through fifth positions to guarantee the Colgate victory. Inacker led the Raiders with a win at the No. 2 position, downing Joana Sun, 6-3, 6-1. Stimmel followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against O’Donovan in the third spot, followed by sophomore Stephanie Brown (Mendham, N.J.) with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Jeannie Lukin at fourth singles. Rock was able to outlast Byron in three sets at the fifth singles position, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

 

On the men’s side, freshmen duo Alec Goldstein (Bethesda, Md.) and Harry Jewett (Centennial, Colo.) claimed the Raiders lone win on the day, defeating Loic Sessagesimi and Joris Van Eck, 8-3, at the third doubles position. Senior Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) took Marist’s Christian Coley to three sets at the No. 1 singles position but fell just short, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.

 

The women’s squad will be back in action this weekend, April 16-18, when they host the Patriot League Championships. Game-time’s and seedings will be announced later this week. The men’s team will be back on the courts next weekend, April 23-25, when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for the men’s Patriot League Championships.
