– The Colgate University athletic department held its third annual all-sports banquet Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.  The evening honored all 25 varsity sports teams and over 500 student-athletes.

Top presentations were the Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards. The Male Athlete of the Year Award was presented to senior football player Pat Simonds (Sidney, NY). Simonds a 2009 all-American, was one of three FCS players selected to compete in the 85th East-West Shrine game. Simonds broke the Colgate single season record for touchdown receptions with 14 and finished fourth at Colgate in both career receptions and receiving yardage while earning first team All-Patriot League honors in 2009. 

Elise DeRoo (Newton, Conn.)
was the recipient of the Female Athlete of the Year Award.  DeRoo the Patriot League Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earned first-team honors during the indoor season after winning two individual titles in the 5,000-and 3,000-meter runs. DeRoo was also named the Patriot League Female Runner of the Year after winning the cross-country title at the 2009 Patriot League Championships.

The Male Rookie of the Year honor was presented to soccer player Mike Reidy (Webster, N.Y.).  Reidy was honored as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year for the 2009 season and was named to the All-League Second Team.  He finished his rookie season as Colgate’s second leading scorer with 15 points off of seven goals and one assist.

Soccer goalie Ashley Walsh (Cicero, N.Y.) was named the Female Rookie of the Year. Walsh was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year after leading the Raiders in goal all season to help win the teams 11th Patriot League title. Walsh led the conference in saves (122) and saves per game (6.78).

Senior David Ake (Topsfield, Mass.) of the men’s golf team earned the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.  This spring Ake competed in every event for Colgate finishing second on the team and 25th overall at the Dutch Desert Shootout in Chandler, Ariz. followed by a 37th place finish out of a 105-person field at the Lafayette Invitational. An economics major, Ake has a grade point average of 3.58.

The Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award was given to swimmer Sarah Sciarrino (Buffalo, N.Y,) and field hockey goalie Sarah Pedersen (State College, Pa.). Sciarrino closed out her swimming career with three top 15 performances at the 2010 Patriot League Championships in Annapolis, Md. Sciarrino finished 11th in the 200 freestyle, 12th in the 50 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle. Sciarrino was the recipient of the Donna Carter Award, which goes to the senior swimmer who excels athletically and academically. She sported a 3.97 grade point average in physics heading into her final semester.

Pedersen finished her career ranked sixth on Colgate’s all-time goalie win list for field hockey and led the Patriot League with 121 saves, while her 7.56 saves per game ranked 12th nationally. For her efforts on and off the field, Pedersen became the second Raider to be chosen as the Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar Athlete of the Year. She sported a 3.97 grade point average in biology heading into her final semester.

The John LeFevre ’41 Appreciation Award was presented to Carolyn Godfrey, local supporter of Colgate athletics, and Mike Holobosky, Colgate University Printing.  It is given to a member of the Colgate community who has demonstrated exemplary support and contributed significantly to the Athletics Department.

It was also announced The Howard Hartman Coach of the Year Award was presented to women’s soccer coach Kathy Brawn.  The award is given to a coach who has demonstrated the ability to motivate, to instill discipline, to help build character and perseverance, to display resourcefulness and to be adept at teaching the fundamentals of their sport.  She will receive her award in May at the University Convocation ceremony.
