CENTER VALLEY, PA. (4/28/2010) – Four members of the Colgate women’s lacrosse program were named first team all-league recipients as the Patriot League announced its end of season awards, Wednesday morning.
Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.), Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Courtney Miller (Chappaqua, N.Y.) are repeat first team honorees from last season, while sophomore netminder Christina Roa (Potomac, Md.) garnered the recognition for the first time in her career.
“I’m very proud of Meghan, Colleen, Courtney and Christina,” said Colgate head coach Heather Young. “It’s an honor to have our league head coaches recognize them for their efforts and performances they have displayed all season. Having four selections on the first team speaks volumes about our team and how dynamic we are. This is a tribute not only for these four players, but out entire team as well.”
The first team was comprised of 13 members with Colgate and Lehigh each being represented by four players, while Holy Cross had two first team honorees. American, Lafayette and Navy rounded out the team with one member.
Lawler, a 2009 first team honoree, heads into the Patriot League Tournament with 33 goals and 42 assists in 16 appearances. The senior ranks among the top 10 nationally in four statistical categories. Her 2.63 assists per outing leads the nation, while her total assist number is second. In addition, she ranks sixth in the country in total points and her 4.80 points per outing is eighth. In her final year, Lawler has erased two school records which have stood for quite some time. On April 9, she captured the single-season assist record at Colgate which stood since the 1982 campaign and two weeks later bypassed Shari Krasnoo’s former school career record of 79 helpers set between 1988-91. Lawler, who stands fourth on the Raiders’ all-time point list with 208, has 84 assists in her career. In six league games this season, she amassed 27 points on 13 goals and 14 assists.
Bubnack, who has garnered all-league honors three consecutive seasons, has tallied 34 goals and 19 assists in 15 outings for the Raiders. In her six Patriot League clashes, the junior posted 17 goals and eight assists. Earlier this season, Bubnack became the all-time leader in draw control wins at Colgate surpassing current Raider assistant coach Heidi Ross’ former mark of 108. She has 132 in her career. During the course of her third season, Bubnack also moved into the top 10 in career assists (62) and groundballs (145), where she stands fourth and 10th respectively. She is tied for 35th nationally with 2.60 ground balls per game.
In 16 outings, Miller has registered 34 goals and 10 assists for 44 points. The sophomore leads the team with 43 ground balls and her 52 draw control wins broke the single season record formerly set by Bubnack back in 2008 of 50. After two seasons, she already ranks seventh on the career draw control list with 93. Miller heads to the Patriot League Tournament ranked tied for 18th nationally in draw controls per game (3.25) and her 2.69 ground balls are tied for 27th in the country. She was twice named the league’s offensive player of the week on March 29 and again on April 12 after exploding for nine goals in two games, including a five-goal effort in a thrilling sudden death upset victory over then 20th ranked Florida.
Roa, a two-time 2010 Patriot League Goalie of the Week selection, enters the weekend sporting a 9-7 record in net for the Raiders. The sophomore ranks fourth nationally with 175 saves, while her 10.94 saves per game average is fifth in the country. During the season, she has posted 10 or more saves in 12 of her 16 appearances. On March 16, she started a streak of eight consecutive games with double figured save totals with a 13-save performance in a 9-7 victory at George Mason. It could be said that her final game in that streak was her best overall performance of her career. On April 11, she stopped 16 shots, including a few late in regulation and in overtime to help pace Colgate to a 12-11 victory over visiting Florida. Her 175 saves on the year ranks ninth on Colgate’s single-season list and her 261 career saves also ranks ninth all-time.
Navy’s Erin Rawlick was named the Patriot League’s Offensive Player of the Year, while Lauren Dykstra of Lehigh was chosen the defensive player of the year. Amy Martin (Holy Cross) and Addie Godfrey (Lafayette) were respectively tabbed as the league’s goalie and rookie of the year. After leading her squad to the regular-season crown, Lehigh’s Jill Redfern was named the coach of the year.
Colgate, 9-7 overall, will be in search of its third-consecutive Patriot League Tournament crown this weekend at Lehigh. The Raiders will carry the third seed into the event and will open with second seeded Navy in a rematch of the 2009 tournament finale. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem.
