Colgate Falls 15-10 in PLT Semifinal to Navy

BETHLEHEM, PA. (4/30/2010) – Quincey Spagnoletti (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored a career-high three goals but it wasn’t enough as Navy downed Colgate 15-10 in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament, Friday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Courtney Miller (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) each collected two goals and an assist as Colgate’s season ended at 9-8. Senior Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) finished her playing career fourth on the Raiders' all-time point list with 210 after a two-assist afternoon.
The Mids drew first blood as Mary Ruttum came out from behind the cage and went low on Colgate's Christina Roa (Potomac, Md.) for the first goal at 25:29.
The Raiders knotted the game 69 seconds later as Lawler connected with a cutting Miller down the middle and the sophomore found the net for the 35th time of the year.
Navy took the lead for good with 23:38 left in the opening half as Caitlin Mandrin-Hill netted her 29th of the year.
Down 4-1, Spagnoletti brought Colgate back within two goals as the freshman took a pass outside and cut her way through the Navy defense before beating goalie Elaina Ponchione high. It was the freshman’s eighth consecutive game with a goal.
After the Midshipmen scored their fifth goal to regain a three-goal advantage, Colgate called timeout with 16:23 left. The Raiders answered by scoring two of the next three goals.
At 15:25, Miller was set up to attempt a free position shot. On her way to the cage, she elected to pass off last second to Katie Sullivan (Cockeysville, Md.). The sophomore snagged the feed and scored from the left side of the net for her 17th of the year. The teams traded goals the rest of the way out in the first half. After Navy regained a three goal advantage at 6-3, Miller converted on a free position shot high at 11:09 to bring Colgate within two. Down 7-4, Bubnack found senior Alex Kuntz (Annapolis, Md.) inside and the senior scored high on Ponchione with 3:43 remaining in the opening half. Navy went into intermission with an 8-5 advantage after scoring with 25 seconds left in the opening half.
After the Mids scored in the opening 10 seconds of the second half, Spagnoletti answered with an unassisted goal at 28:45, her 17th of the year to pull the Raiders back within 9-6. The sophomore posted her career-high third goal less than four minutes later chasing Ponchione to the sidelines. However, Navy answered by winning the draw control and scoring 11 seconds later to up its lead to 10-7 with 24:36 left.
Trailing by five, Colgate hit the scoring column again with 10:57 left as Lawler found Kate Bergstrom (San Francisco, Calif.) with a pass inside and the junior converted it into her 26th goal of the season. Down 15-8, Bubnack collected back-to-back unassisted goals 79 seconds apart for her 35th and 36th goals of the season.
Roa posted nine saves in the loss. The sophomore finished the season with 184 on the season.
