Men's V4 Earn First-Place Finish at Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (4/5/10) -   The Colgate men’s crew team opened its 2010 spring season at the Murphy Cup this weekend in Philadelphia, Pa. The men entered three boats to compete, including a Varsity 4, Novice 4 and Varsity 2.
 
The men’s Varsity 4 earned a first place win in the final race after qualifying with the best time out of four heats at 6:28.27. The men beat out five other teams in the final race crossing the finish line with a time of 6:36.15, three seconds ahead of the next best team. Philadelphia University earned second place with a time of 6:39.35, followed by Dowling, Lehigh, Lafayette and Washington College, respectively. Making up the winning team for the Raiders was James Clinton (Vancouver, B.C.), Sam Walker (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Marc Cassone (Plattsburgh, N.Y.), Matt Woodrow (Glenview, Ill.) and May Bayer (Boston, Mass.) as coxswain.
 
The Raiders Novice 4 won the third heat with a time of 7:00.18 to qualify for the final race. Rowing for Colgate were freshmen Owen Myers (Winnetka, Ill.), Stephen Dickinson (Malvern, Pa.), Pierre Gross (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore Frederick Petty, with Robert Hendrickson as coxswain. The men finished second in the final race with a time of 7:04.18, just three seconds after leader La Salle. Drexel finished third followed by New York Maritime, Pittsburgh and Penn State, respectively.
 
Sophomore Ben Jones (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and freshman Spencer Brooks manned the Varsity 2 boat, qualifying for the final after finishing their heat with a time of 7:45.73. In the final, the duo finished fifth with a time of 8:27.41. Penn State was the top finisher with a time of 7:32.12. 
 
The men will be back in action this weekend when they compete at the Knecht Cup, April 10-11, in Camden, N.J.
