REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (4/6/10) - Led by sophomore Ben Jessen (West Simsbury, Conn.) the Colgate men’s golf team finished seventh out of eleven teams at the Rehoboth Beach Spring Invite this past weekend. Held at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Del., the course measures at 6480 yards and is a par 71.
The University of Maryland won the Invitational with a two-day total of 579 (289-290), followed by host school University of Pennsylvania with a score of 581 (293-288). The Raiders, who finished just one stroke back from sixth-place Lafayette, had a two-day score of 630 (311-319).
Jessen, the Raiders top performer, finished tied for 21st after shooting a 153 (75-78). Josh Spellman (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) finished second for Colgate with a score of 156 (77-79) and tied for 27th place overall. Rounding out the Raiders performers were junior Neil Thompson (Sherborn, Mass.), sophomore Chase Williams (Columbus, Ohio) and seniors David Ake (Topsfield, Mass.) and Nick Parry (Washington D.C.).
Delaware’s Justin Martinson finished as the top individual at the event, scoring nine under par with a 133 (67-66). Maryland’s John Popeck and Delaware’s Greg Matthias were tied for second place with a 141. Maryland and Penn each placed three individuals in the top 10, while Patriot League foe Lafayette had one.
Other schools competing in the two-day event included Rutgers, Fordham, Duquesne, St. Francis (Pa.), St. Francis (N.Y.) and Monmouth.
The Raiders will be back on the links this weekend, April 10-11, at the Lafayette Invitational in Easton, Pa.
