HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/7/10) - The Colgate Raiders men’s tennis team blanked regional opponent Hamilton, 7-0, on Tuesday, April 6 at Colgate’s Sanford Field House. The Raiders improve to 8-6 in nonconference play, while the Continentals drop to 2-5 overall.
The Raiders first swept Hamilton in doubles play led by senior co-captains Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) and John Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) playing at the No. 1 spot on Senior Day. The duo defeated Hamilton’s Jon Franzel and Andrew Libin, 8-6. Juniors Phil Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ruslan Goussiatnikov (Needham, Mass.) downed Michael Moreno and Jordan Petit, 8-2, at second doubles. Wrapping up doubles action were freshmen partners Alec Goldstein (Bethesda, Md.) and Harry Jewett (Centennial, Colo.) with an 8-3 victory against Coby Berman and Gregory Kreitzer at the third doubles.
In singles action, Yassky led the Raiders with a decisive victory at first singles, giving up just one game to Franzel, 6-1, 6-0. Nogueras downed Libin, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 position while Bernasek posted the same score, 6-2, 6-2 against Petit at third singles.
Goldstein claimed the fourth singles victory for Colgate, 6-2, 6-1, against Kreitzer. Sophomore Sean Spellberg (Naples, Fla.) defeated Moreno at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 7-6 while classmate Connor Feuille (San Francisco, Calif.) took out Peter Erwin, 6-2, 6-0, in the final singles match.
“I was very happy to get a win for our senior captains John and Michael,” commented head coach Bobby Pennington. “They have had great careers and will be sorely missed.”
The Raiders will return to their conference slate this weekend when they take on Lehigh on Saturday, April 10, at 10 a.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
