Women's Basketball Signs Three for Class of 2014

HAMILTON, N.Y. (5/20/10) – The Colgate University women’s basketball head coach Pam Bass has announced the signing of three standout student-athletes for the class of 2014. Kathryn Taylor (Dundee, Scotland/Kent School), Lauryn Kobiela (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) and Catherine Lewis (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s) will join the Raiders’ program in the upcoming 2010-11 season.

“We are thrilled that Kathryn, Lauryn and Catherine have decided to join the Colgate family,” Bass said. “They are outstanding student-athletes. Each will impact our program in their own way and they all add competitive spirit, athleticism and depth to our roster.”

Taylor, a 6-1 post spent her senior year at the Kent School in Kent, Connecticut. She averaged 13.6 points and 5.6 rebounds during her senior season and played in the NESPSAC All-Star game. Originally from Dundee, Scotland, Taylor brings international experience to Colgate. She has played for the Scottish National Team Program since 2004, starting with the U14 team. She played for the U16 Scottish Cup Champions and U18 Champions, including a National League runner-up finish. Taylor also played with the Scotland U18 team in the Division B European Championships in 2008. She played with her club city team, Edinburgh Kool Kats, earning U18 Outstanding Team Contribution Award in 2009 and was named MIP in 2008.

Coach Bass on Kathryn:
“Kathryn will give us a nice offensive and defensive presence in the paint. She has exceptional post moves on the offensive end and gives our post-play an added layer of finesse and athleticism. She is highly driven and will be a great addition to our program.”

Kobiela, a 5-9 utility guard from Charlotte Catholic High School, averaged 13.1 points, 4 rebounds and 3.7 assists during her senior season. She was a three-time All Conference performer, including conference MVP in 2009. She also garnered 2nd team all-state honors and was selected to the 19th Annual Charlotte All-Star Classic, participating for the West Team and to the historic North Carolina-South Carolina All-Star Game. Kobiela is a versatile player and athlete. She holds the high school record in the triple jump and is a state qualifier in the event.

Coach Bass on Lauryn:
“From the first time I saw Lauryn play, I noticed her versatility and ability to attack off the dribble. She will be a great addition to our backcourt with her passing abilities and with her desire to set her team up for success.”

Lewis, a 5-10 guard from St. Peter’s High School for Girls, is a three-time
Staten Island CHSAA Champion and won the New York Archdiocesan Championship in 2009. She was tabbed 2010 SI Preseason Player of the Year. A senior captain, Lewis averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds per game during her senior season, earning her New York Post SI first team honors.

Coach Bass on Catherine:
“Catherine is a pure competitor. She loves the game, loves to play the game, and has a high basketball IQ. She wants the ball with the game on the line and will work hard to put her team in a position to win.”

“All three are joining us with outstanding credentials and success both in the classroom and on the court. Kathryn, Lauryn, and Catherine come from winning programs. They already know how to win and are used to winning. They have the drive, dedication, and skills to help our Colgate program reach another level.”
