CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (8/22/10)
– The Colgate women’s soccer team (0-1) suffered its first setback against No.17 Virginia (2-0), 6-0, during their season opener on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.

Despite an impressive 11 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Walsh (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), the 2009 Patriot League champions were unable to withstand the offensive surge of the ACC powerhouse.

“We knew we were coming into a difficult game against an outstanding Virginia team, and that proved to be the case,” stated head coach Kathy Brawn after the game.

The Cavaliers opened scoring in the 16th minute with a long shot from the top of the box. They then scored again 20 minutes later, to close the first half of the game with a 2-0 lead.

The second half proved to be the more difficult of the two, with Virginia scoring an additional four goals to secure their second win of the season. Although facing their first loss of the season, Brawn believes that this could be a pivotal step for the team moving forward.

“The good news is that the players are coming out of the game with a learning experience,” Brawn said. “We know what we need to work on and where we need to improve, so this is a springboard moving forward to our next game against Rutgers.”

Colgate will face the Scarlet Knights on Aug. 27 in Piscataway, N.J.
