HAMILTON, N.Y. (8/26/10) – The Colgate University Athletic Department hosted its annual first-year student-athlete orientation on Thursday, Aug. 26 at the University’s Chapel. The event was a success, drawing in over 200 student-athletes, coaches and parents.

The orientation, which featured speeches from a variety of department representatives including Director of Athletics David Roach, is part of the department’s effort to equip the student-athletes with the tools and resources they will need to be successful at Colgate University.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to meet the first-year student-athletes and their parents and welcome them to the Colgate athletic department family,” stated
Ann-Marie Guglieri, the Assistant Director of Athletics-Compliance Coordinator.

Among other speakers were men’s senior lacrosse player and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president, Rob Bosco, senior field hockey standout Laura Denenga, and associate professor of Biology, Frank Frey. The department also invited Jim and Mary Davis, parents of assistant field hockey coach and former player Heather Davis, to talk to about the life of a student-athlete parent, as all three of their daughters have played a sport at the college level.

“I think it’s a great way to welcome parents and students to the university, and help set the tone for the year,” Roach said. “We here at Colgate University, emphasize academics and athletics and we want the student-athletes to know that they run hand in hand and that we are all here to help them.”

The student-athletes, some of which have already started their preseason practices, will begin classes on Aug. 30.
