PISCATAWAY, N.J. (8/27/10) –The Colgate women’s soccer team (0-2) was unable to hold off No.17 Rutgers (2-0); suffering their second loss of the season on Friday, Aug. 27 in Piscataway, N.J.
Despite a fantastic goal in the 63rd minute from an incredible header by sophomore forward
Jillian Kinter (Newburyport, Mass.), the team could not hold out the BIG EAST powerhouse, falling to the Scarlet Knights 4-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ashley Walsh (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), had yet another impressive night in goal, keeping the Raiders in the game with an outstanding seven saves.
“Ashley had an incredible game," stated head coach
Kathy Brawn after the game. "She is one of the best goalkeepers that we have ever seen."
The match remained scoreless until the 44th minute when the Scarlet Knights found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead at the end of the half. They soon found the net again, just six minutes into the second half, with a goal in the 51st minute.
Despite the two goal deficit, the Raiders came back with a goal in the 63rd minute from a header by Kinter. The Raiders continued to play aggressively through the second half, holding Rutgers to a one-goal lead. But even with their best efforts, the Scarlet Knights proved to be too strong for the Raiders, scoring two late goals in the 70th and 90th minutes, to end the game with a final score of 4-1.
“Giving up a goal in the first half was unfortunate,” said Brawn. “I think we had a bit of a mental breakdown after being so mentally strong for 44 minutes, and Rutgers took great advantage of it.”
As Colgate begins its preparations for the next game, Brawn still believes in her team and the potential of her players.
“We need to pick things up on the offensive end of the field and attack with more of a purpose,” Brawn said. “We have great things to build on and once we fix some things in the defense, we will be in great shape moving forward in the season.”
The Raiders will resume play against Syracuse on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1:00 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
