Compliance Information for Boosters
Dear Alumni, Boosters, and Friends:
Colgate athletics has established a great level of success throughout the years. Much of this success can be attributed to the athletes, coaches, and administration who strive to ensure Colgate remains a well-recognized and well-respected athletics program, both on and off the field of competition. However, another key component to Colgate’s success has been the sustained support of alumni, boosters and friends of the Raider athletics program. The University is proud of the tradition that accompanies our athletics program, but is equally impressed by the effort of our supporters to abide by all NCAA rules regulating collegiate athletics.
The commitment to excellence by the entire Colgate University family is, and will remain, a priority in all aspects of the program. This commitment involves knowing and complying with all NCAA, Patriot League, and ECAC rules. Integrity, tradition and values are qualities that have long been associated with Colgate University athletics. Our mission is not only to continue our winning ways, but also to win the right way!
As a Colgate athletics booster, your loyalty and enthusiasm are unmatched. This year we simply ask that you put forth the same level of loyalty and enthusiasm in helping us make sure all NCAA, Patriot League and ECAC rules and regulations are followed. Colgate is grateful for all you have done to make us the model for academic and athletic excellence. We know you share in our goal to achieve athletic success within the rules. Go ‘Gate!
Sincerely,

David Roach
The NCAA considers you a “representative of athletics interest” (RAI) if:
- You are or have ever been a member of any group that supports or promotes the Colgate athletics program;
- Have made financial contributions to that athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution;
- Assist or have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes;
- Assist or have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or
- Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program.
*Remember: ONCE A BOOSTER, ALWAYS A BOOSTER*
Prospective Student-Athletes:
A prospective student-athlete is any student that has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not yet started ninth grade is still a prospect if the institution provides any benefit that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. An individual remains a prospective student-athlete until one of the following occurs (whichever is earlier):
-
The individual officially registers and enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies and attends classes in any term of a four-year collegiate institution’s regular academic year; or
-
The individual participates in a regular squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution that occurs before the beginning of any term; or
-
The individual officially registers and enrolls and attends classes during the summer prior to initial enrollment and receives institutional athletics aid.
As a Boosters/RAI you may:
- Continue to have contact with an established family friend or neighbor who is a prospect, so long as this relationship occurred prior to that athlete’s participation in athletics and predates the athlete’s status as a prospect. However, such contact may not be for recruiting purposes and may not be initiated by a Colgate staff member.
- Provide an occasional home meal to a current student-athlete. If you do so, please contact the Compliance Office for the proper documentation.
- Provide jobs and internships to student-athletes particularly in the summer. The pay for these jobs must be at the going rate for that position.
As a Booster/RAI you may NOT:
- Provide “extra benefits” to current or prospective student-athletes. This includes the provision of any transportation, meals, housing, clothes, service, entertainment or other benefit of monetary value not available to all students.
- Provide room, board, transportation, or any other special arrangement for a student-athlete, or his or her family or friends.
- Provide any payment of expense or loan of an automobile for a student-athlete to return home or to any location.
- Provide gifts or awards to a student-athlete for any reason.
- Use the name, picture or appearance of an enrolled student-athlete to advertise, recommend, or promote sales or use of a commercial product or service of any kind.
- You may not have any contact (i.e., telephone calls, correspondence, etc.) with a prospect’s family on or off campus. If a prospect approaches you regarding Colgate University athletics, explain that NCAA rules preclude you from discussing that with him/her.
- You may not contact a prospect’s coach, principal or counselor for the purpose of evaluating a prospect’s athletic ability or academic record.
- You may not talk to a student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of encouraging him/her to transfer to Colgate University.
